Clinic News and Frequently Asked Questions

How can I access medical services for Immigration Canada?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022
Dr Kevin Martin will begin immigration medicals in July 2022. Until then we are not accepting any bookings. Please do not call or email to book an immigration medical until the last week of June. Please be patient with staff as we begin this new service.

Where is the clinic located?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022
Please take note that we have moved to a new location. Effective October 4, 2021, all in-person doctor and nursing appointments will be held at our new location: Colvile Medical Building, Unit 401 - 1515 Dufferin Crescent, Nanaimo, BC. You can access the clinic by the front entrance on Dufferin Crescent. There is an elevator and stairs accessible both from any level of the parkade and also from the front lobby.

Where is parking at the clinic?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

There is free street parking (although it can be difficult to find at peak hours) or you can park in the parkade (the entrance is shown in the photo and it costs $1 per hour although the first 30 minutes is free).

Do you offer flu shots?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

To find a influenza vaccine clinic near you, please visit IslandFluClinics.ca or Immunize BC. Unfortunately due to a lack of supply of flu vaccines from Island Health we are not able to offer influenza vaccinations for all patients. We have a small supply but these are only being offered only to high-risk patients at present. Please discuss this with your doctor.

How can I get an in-person appointment?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

All doctors are offering in-person medical appointments as we have throughout the COVID pandemic. If you require an in-person appointment please call the office to book it. If you are uncertain about how to proceed you can call the office and request clarification or you can start out by using online booking to book a phone appointment with your doctor to discuss the issue first. Subsequently you and your doctor can arrange for an in-person appointment as needed. In general, as of Fall 2021, we are transitioning heavily back towards in-person appointments.

How do I get an appointment if I have an urgent issue?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

If you have an urgent unexpected issue (eg. a bladder infection) you can call first thing in the morning and we usually have a "doctor of the day" who can try to address urgent issues, but this is subject to availability. It is generally offered every day of the week except Sunday. Sometimes your family doctor can also fit you in if they have an extra slot (if your family doctor is not the Doctor of the Day on that particular day).

Is this a walk-in clinic?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

We are NOT a walk-in clinic. You must have an appointment and you cannot get an appointment unless your family doctor is an associate at Wellington Medical Clinic.

When can I pick up forms?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

Forms can be picked up between the hours of 900am – Noon and 1 – 3pm on Monday through Friday. We are closed for form pick up from Noon – 1pm and on all Saturdays.

Do you need to be vaccinated for COVID to visit the clinic?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

In general, we recommend COVID vaccinations to all patients. However, a COVID vaccination is not required in order to access care at the clinic. All patients and visitors must wear a mask. Exceptions are made for infants and toddlers.

Can I book an appointment online?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

Yes, you can book online but you can only book phone appointments and you must book with your family doctor. If you attempt to book with another doctor this will be cancelled. If you need an in-person appointment, just give us a call.

Why are there delays when I call the clinic?

Dr Toom    Last updated: May 21, 2022

COVID has created unprecedented challenges for the clinic including staffing shortages and significantly increased demand for medical services. All of the doctors at the clinic work elsewhere including in the emergency room and delivering babies and working on the hospital wards. We are looking after patients who are COVID-positive every day. There is a lot of strain on the medical system. We are doing everything possible to improve the experiences of our patients. Unfortunately our front-desk staff sometimes face abusive comments which is extremely regretable because they are doing their best. If you have to wait on hold this is not the fault of staff. We understand that patients have serious medical concerns and that they are experiencing challenges in accessing the care they deserve throughout the medical system. Please be aware that we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding.
