When you see your family doctor and request a referral to a specialist, it is submitted to the front end and processed electronically from there. The specialist office will triage (place in order of urgency against all referrals received) and offer the soonest appointment available.

It is not uncommon for there to be a 6-12 month wait, sometimes longer dependent on speciality, to see a specialist for a non-urgent appointment.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons has recommended that the best point of contact is the specialist office as they can better prepare you and keep in touch about the details of your consultation.

Dependent on specialist office procedures, most often they will be the one to contact you with an appointment. As such, it is very important to keep your personal contact information here at the clinic up to date so that the specialists are able to contact you. If they are unable to reach you, it may result in cancellation of your referral and/or appointment.
